ARTERIAL DOPPLER
WHAT IS AN ARTERIAL DOPPLER?
A Doppler ultrasound study is a test using sound waves to examine the structures inside your body while also evaluating blood flow. This test is used to detect problems (such as a blockage or narrowing) with the arteries in your lower extremities (arms) and upper extremities (arms).
HOW IS THE ARTERIAL DOPPLER PERFORMED?
You will be asked to lie on your back with your head elevated slightly (occasionally, the technician may want to obtain some images while you are standing). The technician will put a small amount of gel on your legs. The technician will then lightly touch a probe to your skin over the gel. The probe is painless and does not break the skin. This allows the technician to see the flow of blood through your arteries on a screen. The technician will move the probe down the length of your leg while watching and listening to the flow of blood.
The test itself takes approximately 45 minutes (but time for the test may vary). Following the test, a radiologist will review the pictures and provide a report to Dr. Gordon.
PREPARATION
It is recommended that you wear something soft and comfortable. You will be asked to remove clothing from your lower extremities (socks, shoes, and pants) prior to the test. Please bring any medications you routinely take during the day.
You can return to normal activities following the test.
